e consider Cana a paradise. In wildness it is comparable to Yellowstone in winter. There is plenty of good, cold Panamanian beer. The beds are comfortable, and you sleep in blissful happiness dreaming about the birds you have seen. Pauraques call outside your room as you fall asleep, and Great and Little Tinamous sing as you wake.

You encounter few mosquitoes. Chiggers and tiny ticks can be avoided if you soak your field clothes in permethrin prior to your trip. For best protection, treat your clothes with permethrin a day or two before leaving for Panama. Place one outfit of shirt, pants and socks in a jumbo zip-lock bag. Pour in a bottle of permethrin liquid. Allow to soak for several hours. Hang to dry.

Cana lunch

An attenuated birding guide is handy. Using a cutter, carefully slice the plates out of your Ridgely and Gwynne's Guide to the Birds of Panama. Slice out the index, too. Copy the cover, and take this and the cut pages to your local copy center, where they can be bound in a neat little version for your pouch or fannypack.
