Our Dreams for Karen Blixen
in the Twenty-First Century

An Editorial from Coulsong
press
Our hopes for Karen Blixen in the coming
years:
In the near future:
- A play by Harold Pinter of Isak
Dinesen's
"The Dreaming
Child" (from Winter's Tales) will be developed into a movie.
- A new book will explore questions
about
Karen Blixen
that have been argued by scholars for many years.
In the not-too-distant future:
- Karen Blixen in Denmark: Letters
1931-1962
will be published in English.
- Karen Blixen's complete writings will
be
available
on disk and will be searchable by topic. This will allow for a more
thorough
analysis of her oeuvre.
- A 21st Century traveling exhibit
about
Karen Blixen
will use the wide availability of technical media, including a short
film
about her with sound-track available in several languages.
- A new Karen Blixen website produced
in
Denmark will
present to the world news about Karen Blixen events, including new
books
by and about Karen Blixen, awards given in honor of Karen Blixen, and
projects
created in Karen Blixen's name. This website will be easy to navigate,
filled with fascinating details, and feature quotations from Karen
Blixen.
Its dynamic information will encourage the already strong interest
world-wide
in Karen Blixen's life and works.
- Karen Blixen's complete letters from
Africa will
be published, first in Denmark, then world-wide.
- A new, 50-minute documentary produced
for
television
will revive fascination with Karen Blixen's life.
- An American publisher will specialize
in
a new line
of works by and about Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen. The publisher will
know
that Karen Blixen's life and works appeal to a broad general audience.
(Some ten thousand new presses are founded yearly in America; although
large American publishing houses are no longer thriving, overall, the
milieu
is now ideal for cooperation between Danish and American publishers.)
- A new, readable and accurate,
comprehensive biography
of Karen Blixen will be published, based upon primary sources.
- Old animosities between American
interests and Karen
Blixen's Danish interests will heal.
- Scholarly writings about Karen Blixen
will appear
in the vernacular (as opposed to academic jargon), enjoyable by readers
of all nationalities. Background information about Karen Blixen will
contain
specific details and few esoteric generalizations. Illustrations of
Karen
Blixen will emphasize how she looked in life, rather than as she was
dying.
- There will be a new, open perspective
upon Karen
Blixen's legacy.
In the distant future:
- A collection of Karen Blixen's short
stories will
include a separate telling of the inset tales found in her longer
works.
These inset tales, so popular with students, are already the length
that
appeals to readers, and are an ideal introduction to Isak Dinesen.
- Eventually it will be realized that
Karen
Blixen's
life was as important as her literary works. Some fifty million people
around the world saw the movie about her life, and Out of Africa
remains one of the most popular stories of all time.
- Karen Blixen's protectors will
understand
that her
legacy can continue only if she is written about objectively.
Permission
to write about her, either acknowledged or subliminal, will be a thing
of the past.
- The Danes, with their fine sense of
humor, will understand
that Karen Blixen's peculiarities and legend are part of their own
national
heritage. Denmark will be eventually as proud of Karen Blixen as of
Hans
Christian Andersen.
