Denys Finch Hatton's Boyhood Home

Denys Finch Hatton spent his early years at Haverholme Estate, near the village of Ewerby, in Lincolnshire, England.

Ewerby lies in the fens, lowlying country in central England. The village name, ending in -by ("town" in Danish), harkens to the Danelaw, when Vikings ruled this part of England. In spring the county is graced by millions of daffodils.

A hundred years ago Ewerby was a village of thatched cottages. Today the Finch Hatton Arms, a Victorian hostelry, offers modern rooms and spacious, colorful dining.

The church houses a marble effigy of the 12th Earl of Winchilsea, Denys Finch Hatton's uncle, and, on the wall above it, a host of family memorial plaques. The family plaques can be seen on the wall to the left of the altar.

"Erected by his brother in proud and ever loving memory of Denys George Finch Hatton, 2nd son of the 13th Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham, born 24th April 1887, killed flying in Kenya, 14th May 1931."

The plaque in honor of Guy Finch Hatton--Denys's brother "Toby"--reads "He prayeth well who loveth well, both man and bird and beast."

Haverholme was sold in 1926 to an American woman, who had it dismantled, stone by stone, to be rebuilt in America. The cargo was on the dock in Liverpool when the buyer became the only victim in a train crash. Eventually, the stones, never shipped to America, were used to build new docks. Today one tower and a portion of the ornamental balustrade are all that remains.
