Denys Finch Hatton named his dog Sirius, after the Dog Star--the brightest star in the sky--part of the Big Dog (Canis Major) which follows the Hunter Orion. Sirius forms the breast of the Big Dog. You can find it easily by drawing a line eastward along the three bright stars in Orion's belt. In northern latitudes you can see the constellation in winter, especially after midnight.
