A. The quotation from Karen Blixen is correct. In her Letters from Africa, she writes to her sister Ellen Dahl on 13 March 1928:

"I have come across the same temperament out here in Eric Otter, whom I may have talked about. I think I made him very unhappy, but it would have been impossible for me to have made him happy, and the worst thing that could have happened to him would have been my marrying him, for I, like the majority of human beings, am incapable of 'living for' one person and still less of letting another person 'live for me,' and could not possibly have done it for him. . . ."
