A. Karen Blixen described her life as similar to a stork drawn in a
children's story. She explains the story in Out of Africa (page
261-2), in the chapter "From an Immigrant's Notebook."
She also referred to the story in a letter to her mother on June 14,
1917: "Just when one feels one is floundering in the deepest
despair,--'fall into a ditch, get out again,'--is when one is
perfecting the work of art of one's life. . . the greatest moments have
been those when I have been able to glimpse the stork" (Letters from
Africa, p. 49).
