Question 123: Marrying for the title Baroness?
Q. Did Karen Blixen really marry her husband for the title Baroness?
A.
She did want the title Baroness. This was a goal for wealthy women in
her time. Did you know, over 500 wealthy Americans married titled
Europeans around the turn of the twentieth century?
She married Bror for the title, but her letters suggest she was in love
with him all through her marriage. Talking about a relationship that
seems to resemble her own, she says in a story called "The Pearls,"
"The gossips of Copenhagen would have it that the bridegroom had
married for money, and the bride for a name, but they were all wrong.
The match was a love affair...." (Winter Tales, p. 108-109.)
