Question 129: Source of: ". . . never again be birds in cages"?

Q. I am skeptical about the source for a quote commonly attributed to Dinesen. Have you come across it?:
"If only I could so live and so serve the world that after me there should never again be birds in cages."

A. I don't recognize the quotation you mention. I am not able to identify the source according to context in any of her tales. I will say that the diction does not sound like Isak Dinesen, but it is possible that the quotation comes from an interview, which would explain the strange wording. Until a source is provided, it is best to assume that the quote is falsely ascribed to Isak Dinesen.
