Question 88: Horses Aimable and Rouge?
Q. My
question (probably unresolved forever): Karen Blixen's two horses in Africa were named
"Aimable" and "Rouge."Interestingly, there is an old rose from 1820 called
"Aimable Rouge." Could it be a coincidence? She was definitely interested in the
aesthetics of flowers and gardens. . . .
I am presently scouring Karen Blixen's letters in order to find mention
of her two horses. I have found one reference: In a letter of August 23, 1914,
to Ingeborg Dinesen, she writes,
"If you have received my letter from the farm, you will know that
Bror entered as a volunteer -- a kind of 'unfighting,' since he rather
entered to bring intelligence; Ture, Gethin, Fjæstad (from Swedo) and
Kjellberg are serving under him, and they have several stations on the
road between Kijabe and the border to take care of. It was the
intention that I should stay in Kijabe with Kjellberg and help him take
care of the last station there, and I had gone there with my boys and
my lovely new horse Aimable, and Dusk (...)"
