Description of Touring Exhibit 1998-1999: This exhibit of photographs,
quotations and other Blixen memorabilia is accompanied by two films: "Karen
Blixen Storyteller," produced by Christian Braad Thomsen, which includes
interviews with Karen Blixen's friends and family and hitherto unpublished
photographs of Karen Blixen's 1959 American tour; and by "Lucifer's
Child," a one-person play, written by William Luce and produced by
Iris Caplan and Robert Norton, in which Karen Blixen is portrayed by Julie
Harris.
The exhibit appeared in Ottawa, Ontario, May 27-June 7, 1998, and in
Bedford, Nova Scotia, September 14-October 14, 1998. The University of
Alberta at Edmonton hosted the exhibit in late October, and it appeared
for a week at the Danish Lutheran Church in Calgary.
The Danish Luthern Church in Burnaby, near Vancouver, hosted the exhibit
from January 1 through February 22, 1999. Associated events included an
evening with Peabody Award-winning Don Mowatt, producer of the 90-minute
radio documentary "A Profile of Karen Blixen," and a Winterfood
celebration: Solbang yellow pea soup (inspired by the famous Danish colony
near Santa Barbara, California) rye bread, pickled red beets, and applecake
with cream. Pastor Glud read a portion of "The Dreamers" from
Seven Gothic Tales.
In a Nova Scotia mall the exhibit was accompanied by African songs and
dances. If your organization would like to host the exhibit, email Bettina
Skovgaard at the Royal Danish Embassy in Ottawa (danemb@cyberus.ca), or
contact Lise Ravn at the Danish consulate in Los Angeles (310-443-2090).
